Description
Voutianon, Corinth - Tripoli - Kalamata Highway, Lektro - Sparta section. Evangelia Pantou, Evangelia P. Eleutheriou and Maria Florou (5η EBA) report on discoveries made during the construction of the new motorway.
Parts of a bath were found dating between the Late Roman period and the early Byzantine period. The structure was generally rectangular in shape (4.70 x 10.20m), with a maximum surviving height of 2m. Three rooms were discovered, all with orientation NW-SE. Room 1 (4.55 x 6.35m) had a hypocaust. Traces of the original floor were preserved. To the N, Room 2 was found with more hypocaust columns in good condition, maximum height at 0.7–1m. Pipes coated in tegulae mammatae were also found.
To the E, Room 3 was found, whose layout has not been fully revealed. It is oriented EW, 7 x 6.8m. Unpainted utilitarian pottery of the late Roman and early Byzantine periods was found, and a few black-painted sherds of the Roman period. There was also some unpainted pottery from the middle Byzantine period, and two coins.
