Ioannina - 64 Andronikou Palaiologou Street - 2010
Ioannina
Ioannina - 64 Andronikou Palaiologou Street (plot of P. Brachantini). Nikos Choinas and Georgia Pliakou (IB’ ΕΠΚΑ) report on the discovery of ancient building remains within the Kastro of Ioannina.
To the W of the plot, two walls were found which had been broken or cut in the Byzantine period. Inside the space defined by the walls an ancient well was found (Fig. 2) with an internal diameter of 0.75-0.80m which gradually increased at its lowest levels (depth 1.30-1.40m) to 0.90-0.95m. Inside, the excavators found stones, tiles and parts of a large pithos with evidence of burning. Around the area there seems to be evidence of destruction by fire in the second century BC.
At a higher level, two walls were found dating to the Byzantine period.
