Kalampakou / Tatsi Plot, Anemomilos, Corfu - 2008

Kalampakou / Tatsi Plot, Anemomilos, Corfu. Garifalia Metallinou (H’ EPKA) reports on the excavation of a series of walls (Fig. 1), three wells (two of which were modern), part of a paved floor, a mortar-covered floor , a clay tank and a ceramic kiln. 

Walls 1–12 (excluding Wall 2 and Wall 3) were dated to the Roman period on the basis of associated pottery and coins. They form together two rooms (4.7 x 4.7m and 3.3 x 3.5m).

The ceramic kiln was found at a depth of 1.05m, and had a diameter of 1.1m. Its relatively small size indicates it had only local use. 217 coins were found, including a ‘hoard’ of 45 bronze coins at a depth of 1.17m. Bronze rings, needle and rings were also found. 

Part of a stone altar was found, and an inscribed plaque with the word ΘΥΓΑΤ, in addition to another marble inscription probably from a burial, and also a small marble statuette.

Among the pottery, a red-painted vessels were found, figurine heads (including human heads and an ox head), amphora handles, and loomweights. Pottery was mainly unpainted, but there were also some black-painted Hellenistic sherds with impressed decoration, and also some archaic sherds. Large piece of amphoras were also found, including one Roman amphora at a depth of 0.69m, containing the remains of an infant.
