Report
Farres, National Road Prevedos-Farres (property of E. Kolypera). Vasileios Argyropoulos (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the excavation of four cist graves, each made of three clay slabs placed along the long sides and one along the narrow (Fig. 1). They were all dated to the Late Classical-Hellenistic periods.
Grave I was aligned on an E-W axis and was 1.85 m. long by 0.67 m. wide, the upper surface of which was destroyed. The body had been placed in the extended position with the head towards the east. Grave goods included a black-glazed lamp, a lekythion with ‘West Slope’ decoration, black-glazed skyphidion, a kantharos and an askos, along with a bronze mirror. A silver coin of ancient Sikyon had been placed within the mouth of the deceased.
Grave ΙΙ was aligned on a N-S axis and was 1.80 m. long by 0.68 m. wide. The body had also been placed in the extended position. Grave goods included various pots, a bronze mirror and an earring, while a silver coin from the island of Aegina was found in the mouth.
Grave ΙΙΙ was aligned on an E-W axis and was 2.10 m. long by 0.83 m. wide, with the bones gathered together in the centre. Grave goods included a black-glazed amphora (Fig. 3), a pyxis, an iron strigil and an iron nail.
Grave IV was aligned on an E-W axis and was 1.95 m. long by 0.60 m. wide, with parts of the clay covering slab preserved. The body had also been placed in the extended position, while grave goods included various pots and three bronze rings, along with a silver coin of ancient Sikyon which had been placed in the mouth.
To the south of the graves was part of a wall of about 9 m. in length and 1 m. wide, made of three courses of conglomerate blocks.
