Report
Megalopolis, Sophocleous Street (O.T 218, 219, 370, 371, sewage system, Municipality of Megalopolis). Stamatis Fratzilas (ΛΘ’ EΠΚΑ) reports of the discovery of Hellenistic private houses in the ancient city of Megalopolis (Fig. 1).
The houses were preserved only as foundations, built using roughly made small and medium sized stones and clay. The upper parts of the walls were not preserved but must have been made of bricks, while the dividing walls rested directly upon the soil. Fourteen partially preserved walls were excavated, some on an E-W axis and others N-S (Fig. 2). Their preserved lengths ranged between 0.50-3.20 m., while they were between 0.30-0.45 m. wide. Additional finds included eight bronze coins, sherds of black-glazed and unpainted pottery, one fragment of a Megarian skyphos, roof tiles, loom-weights, animal bones, a complete bronze spear point, one bronze coin of the city of Phlious and bronze coins of the city of Sikyon, dated to the second half of the 3rd c. B.C. Based on the finds, the building were dated to the Hellenistic. The houses were destroyed by fire, probably that recorded in 222/223 B.C., in which most of the buildings in the ancient city of Megalopolis were destroyed.
