Megara. Andromachi Katopodi (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on discoveries made during a major project for the environmental upgrade of Megara city, undertaken 2006–2009.
The domestic quarter of ancient Megara was mainly located within its walls, and remained largely unchanged between the Classical and Late Roman periods. There were also small samples of Archaic and Early Byzantine activity. Many of the finds were walls, either related to one another as sections of buildings, or architectural pieces in secondary use. There were many large storage units in the northern part of the city, mainly from the Classical-Hellenistic periods.
A large number of workshops were discovered both within and outside the walls. Many were found in the southern parts of the city, and demonstrate an intensive period of building activity in the Classical-Hellenistic periods, and also Roman times. Sites of this kind are usually identified via ceramics, dyeing fabrics, kilns, and wells.
