Report
Megara, 4 Xenophon Street (O.T. 51, property of Tsoukala-Georgada). Panagiota Avgerinou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of various finds at the above site.
Late Roman / Early Byzantine period: the remains of ceramic kilns were located. Various pipes and trenches were found, some of which showed evidence of combustion. Four further kilns were found. All date from the same period, apart from the final kiln which is dated no later than the Hellenistic period. Building 1 was built on top of the remains of the kilns, and comprises at least five rooms. A cistern was built into room 1, measuring 2.04 x 2.30m. Room 4 seems to relate to a later phase, during which the building was rebuilt and remodelled, making use of earlier standing walls and foundations. Pottery and coins from this phase date to the 4th-6th centuries AD.
First half of the fifth century BC: a building was constructed in this period, comprising two rooms. Ceramics and clay figurines were found here, dating to the end of the sixth and start of the fifth centuries BC. Within this space, a grave was found close to the walls. Pottery from the room (especially Corinthian and Attic pottery) dates from the Archaic period, and it is thought the grave is of a similar date. There are also some red-painted sherds of the fifth century.
Archaic period: a cist grave with two cover slabs was identified, but could not be investigated because of an overlying wall. Two further graves were found S of kiln 5: one was a sarcophagus, with the remains of an adult inside, head oriented to the E; and the other was also a sarcophagus, with the head oriented to the NE. Finds scattered around the burial area include loom weights. Pottery associated with the graves dates to the end of the sixth century BC and the start of the fifth century BC.
