Dans la vieille ville de Volos, Palaia, A. Dina (7e éphorie des antiquités byzantines) a effectué en 2007 des sondages à divers endroits et a mis au jour des vestiges de l’occupation protobyzantine (segments de murs, sols, canalisations, pithoi, des tombes à ciste et à tuile), ainsi que du mobilier datant de l’époque protobyzantine, byzantine et post-byzantine.
Notamment, on a dégagé, dans la rue Sarantaporou, un segment du rempart protobyzantin, ainsi qu’un segment du proteichisma.
