FIGARETO - Kanoni - 2002

Figareto, Kanoni (Revi [formerly Kassari] property). M. Nakou and A. Paramythiotis (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) report that continuing excavation revealed continuous activity from the Early Archaic to the Roman periods, with limited early modern incursions.

The north part of the plot contained workshops, noting many masses of iron and clay, and water channels. The earliest building is a one-roomed Archaic structure. To the next, Classical phase, belong a series of walls from a building complex with sections of four floors variously in tile and clay. The final, Roman, phase is represented by a single wall (1).

Remains in the south part cannot be connected into clear plans: while the function of the area likely changed over time, domestic use is likely, with perhaps a workshop especially in the Classical period (noting the masses of unfired clay west of wall 9 and 230 long oval terracotta objects which are likely kiln props). The earliest, Archaic, phase is represented in the lowest courses of four walls. The Classical phase is clear in five walls and a rectangular terracotta structure, and the Hellenistic in three walls. The final, Roman phase comprises one wall and the bedding course for a floor above it.

Finds include transport amphorae, plain and decorated Classical-Hellenistic pottery (including black and red figure and black glaze), cooking vessels with burning from use, and terracotta figurines (mostly female). Four silver and 238 bronze coins were found, plus the hand of a marble statue, a marble sling shot inscribed ΚΟΡΙΝ, two bronze tools, a stamped roof tile, two stamped amphora handles and four inscribed loomweights (of a total of 180).
