ARGYROUPOLI - 2001

Argyroupoli. Lefkosias Square. K. Kaza-Papageorgiou (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation at the southeast corner of the square, bordered by Thoukydidou and Konstantinoupoleos Streets, which revealed the front parts of two tangential periboloi forming a Π shape 10.8m long. A 1.4m square base was in contact with the outer face of the north peribolos, with a rectangular marble ossuary nearby. The gravel layer of an ancient road running north-south was found to the west of the periboloi. At various points in front of the periboloi lay marble fragments from the sculptural decoration of the funerary monuments: parts of a marble lekythos or loutropohoros with relief depiction of a dexiosis, the crowning of a dedicatory stele, and various other vessel fragments of the fourth century BC.
