LEPENOU - 2001

Lepenou (Langada). A. Vasilogamvrou (then Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery, just north of the village, of a largely destroyed prehistoric settlement (covering ca. 0.4ha) on ca. 25 terraces dug into the steep slope of Mt. Thyamos. Excavation on three of the lower terraces (A, B, Γ) revealed stretches of terrace wall, construction stones, and LH IIIA1-A2 plain and coarse pottery. Building remains were visible on the surface in the east part of terrace Γ; excavation revealed two apsidal buildings with part of a paved floor and a hearth. The hearth area contained, in addition to pottery, a terracotta spindle whorl and a small bronze knife; a cooking pot lay beneath a collapsed wall. The buildings were founded on bedrock or a thick layer of rock chips.

On a higher terrace in the northwest edge of the settlement, sherds of a large handmade of Final Neolithic pithoid vessel with plastic decoration were found on the surface.
