Un nouvel examen du qanat au lieu-dit Aghia Paraskévi, au Nord-Est du village de Chortiatis, permet de remonter la première phase de construction du monument à l’antiquité tardive, voire à l’époque romaine d’après certains éléments de maçonnerie, en tout cas pas à l’époque ottomane, comme on le pensait jusqu’à présent. Par un système complexe de galeries et de canalisations, le qanat acheminait l’eau de la nappe phréatique jusqu’à Thessalonique.
