Olympic Media Centre. †M. Oikonomakou (Β’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on rescue excavations conducted in 2003 and 2004.
In 2003, remains of an extensive Archaic-Late Roman settlement were found west of a large stream which descends from Penteli. This is the site of a large ancient deme, either Phegaia or Probalinthos.

In the former camp site of the Ministry of Education, 22 graves were found, mostly enchytrismoi, cremations and burials in terracotta larnakes (Fig. 1). Seventeen tombs contained goods of the late sixth-fifth centuries (Fig. 2).
In the former camp site of the Police was only one tomb with a marble sarcophagus: the deceased was placed head to the east, and at the feet was a large number of astragaloi, terracotta loomweights and shell. By the chest was a bronze and an iron strigil, two lekythoi, a miniature hydria and a stone egg. In the sarcophagus and above and around the skeleton were pieces of wood and nails from a coffin.
In 2004, a large residential complex (19.5 x 23.5m) was found, plus parts of other structures, with a long period of use and many additions and renovations (Fig. 3). The initial construction was of limestone blocks, but in the later phases the walls were repaired with building materials in secondary use (marble blocks, bases, a column base). Some rooms contained pithoi, others large household vessels, and many tiles dating from the Classical to the Late Hellenistic period and probably later. Slightly southwest of the first buildings were the foundations of a second structure.
