Report
Merkati Thorikou (property of I. Kontou). †M. Oikonomakou (Β’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation on the west side of the Thorikos valley, at the northwest edge of the Stephani hills, in a small valley below the Megalo Ribari hill. A large number of antiquities (mine galleries and ore processing areas, settlements, farm houses and tombs) have been found in the region.
Excavation revealed a large house (32 x 26m explored), in the centre of which is a large courtyard with rooms on three sides. Along the length of the east side was a 11.3 x 16.15m space with two entrances with pilasters and marble thresholds; there is a similar area along the south side. At the north two large rooms (6.3 x 4.9 and 4.6 x 4.9m) also open onto the courtyard, one of which also had a marble threshold (Fig. 1). East of the building, a wine-pressing floor was identified for later investigation (Fig. 2).
