23 Tripoleos Street. Ch. Stoupa (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery along the northeast side of the plot of an Early Classical road which linked the city with Hippios Kolonos, running northwest-southeast and parallel to modern Lenorman Street (Figs 1,2). The west retaining wall was preserved, with six road surfaces from the early fifth to the end of the fourth century BC. The two upper layers had wheel ruts. The retaining wall was founded in rock and built in at least two phases, the oldest going out of use at the beginning of the third century BC (two large conglomerate and limestone blocks of this period are preserved).

In the west part of the trench and a little way from the road were the remains of a building founded in a layer with fourth-century (mainly black glazed) pottery but also many ring-shaped kiln props. The fill in area A contained charcoal, ash, black-glaze and red-figure sherds, pieces of kiln prop, and masses of clay, probably from a fourth-century workshop.

On the southern side of the plot was a cluster of three graves:

1: a third-century BC pit-tile grave, 2 x 0.7m, oriented northeast-southwest, the body supine with the head to the northeast, accompanied by five spindle-shaped unguentaria, a bronze mirror, and a bronze spatula with lead handle. Fourteen iron nails found at the southwest corner of the grave are probably from a wooden coffin.

2: an Early Hellenistic tile grave covered with Corinthian tiles, 2 x 0.75m, oriented northeast-southwest. The body was laid supine with the head to the northeast, and was accompanied by nine third-century spindle-shaped unguentaria.

3: to the southeast, a clay urn covered with rough stones and pieces of large pots.
