Plateia Eleftherias (Koumoundourou). I. Tsirigoti-Drakotou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the conversion of Plateia Eleftherias during work for the unification of the archaeological sites of Athens. Investigation revealed rectangular conglomerate blocks, probably from a burial peribolos, but no further antiquities within the plateia.
In the area of the amphitheatre east of the plateia and near the junction with Kranaou street, in a ditch excavated for a drainage channel, lay a 3m long section of fortification oriented west-east and composed of two series of square conglomerate blocks and tiles. This is probably part of the proteichisma with an addition under Valerian (Fig. 1). The only portable find was a rectangular inscribed block from the area of the ditch north of the proteichisma.
