Plaka. V. Vasilopoulou (Α’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the following works conducted in 2004.
During the partial demolition of a house at 7 Kladou (property of E. Vasileiadi-Leventi), a small single-corridor vaulted Ottoman basement was uncovered, with a Medieval paved floor alonside it (Fig. 1). Its walls contained 145 architectural members and 55 fragments of sculpture and inscriptions, including a relief with horse and rider, and a votive relief with five draped figures.
At 13 Polygnotou (Ministry property), excavation beneath the west room of the house revealed the strong foundation wall (3.4m long) of an ancient building, identified as the Southeast Stoa, oriented southeast-northwest, preserved to a height of two courses (Fig. 2).
Trenches opened for a natural gas line revealed the following. On Areos Street, in front of the entrance to the Library of Hadrian at a depth of 0.56m, fragments of grey cover tiles were found from an Ottoman drain running south-north; a search at the south part of the street at a depth of 1m on the axis of the Late Roman walls proved fruitless. On Panos Street, a 1.1m long section of Ottoman drain with 19 grey marble cover tiles was uncovered, oriented south-north. At the junction of Panos and Dexippou, a section (3.1m long and 0.54m wide) of the north face of the Peribolos of the Roman Agora was discovered.
