Plaka. The following works were undertaken by the Α’ ΕΠΚΑ in 2001.
At Theorias and Arethousas 17a (property of G. Mavroeidi), V. Vasilopoulou reports that the dismantling of walls damaged during the earthquake of 1999 revealed fragments of an inscribed column (0.2 x 0.125 x 0.3m), a Middle Byzantine relief fragment (0.29 x 0.24 x 0.08m) depicting animals (probably cats), and two architectural members.
At a Ministry property on Poikilis 6, works begun in 2000 were completed (see AD 55 [2000] Chr., 48), with the clearance of 119 architectural members and 27 sculptural fragments and inscriptions. Noteworthy were the tip of a left foot with ΑΝΕΘΕΚΕΝ inscribed on its plinth (height 0.061m); part of a torso of a male athlete; part of a torso of a male athlete probably wearing a chlamys; and an inscribed Roman epistyle (1.5m long, 0.29m high, and 0.18m wide).
Works were also completed on a Ministry property at Panos 16, begun in 1997 (see AD 52 [1997] Chr., 33), and now handed over to the 1st EBA as a storeroom for the Metro works. Three fragments of inscribed funerary kioniskoi, an undiagnostic part of a draped figure, and part of an inscribed funerary stele were removed from the north wall of the house.
M. Brouskari reports that excavation at Diogenous 8 revealed a fragmentary inscribed column, a section of sculpted drapery, part of the thigh of a clothed figure, the lower part of a draped statuette with its plinth (0.23 x 0.12 x 0.17m), and 17 architectural members. Upon removing the floor of an earlier building in the north of plot, the foundation of an Ottoman house wall was discovered, built with large stones and strong mortar.
E. Stephanaki reports the discovery of a Medieval or Ottoman olive press at Tholou 7 and Klepsydras. In the south wall of the older house was a stone-built krepis (2.26 x 2.1 x 0.4m) which formed the base of the press (ara): this was composed of re-used architectural members, and on the top was a circular cutting (canalis rotunda) for the flow of the oil. A fragmentary inscribed base of Eleusinian stone was also discovered, along with part of a relief with an animal (possibly a lion), part of an inscribed funerary kioniskos, and 14 architectural members.
