Messene - 2021
Petros Themelis (ASA) reports on continued field research. In the so-called Prayer House (Efktirios oikos), the mosaic pavement was placed in its original position after restoration.
In the Sanctuary of Isis, the North aisle of the underground portico was excavated. Fragments of the marble facing of the theatre and probably stone slabs were found, as well as a part of a 5th century relief, featuring a seated Dioskouros.
At the hierothysio, the colonnade around the central room of the building was partly restored. The excavator argues that this was the cult place for the Theban general Epaminondas, who founded Messene.
Inside the remains of the church, 12th and 14th century graves were excavated, and on the North side, outside the building, remains of stairs were found as well as pipes.
