La 7e Éphorie des Antiquités byzantines a commencé la fouille du fort (fig. 1) : bâti à l'époque des Paléologues, il fut réaménagé à plusieurs reprises. L'enceinte hexagonale comporte six tours ; l'entrée est voûtée.
