Report
Old Parliament Building. P. Marneri (Δ' ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation beneath the first floor rooms conducted during the renovation of the building. Numerous antiquities were revealed (mostly Early Helladic-Middle Byzantine sherds) a large proportion of which came from a previous excavation (540 sherds and 321 figurines were marked with excavation designations, one sherd had previously been described by A. Philadelpheus, and five had paper stickers attached). The figurines, all fragmentary, were found together, and are mostly Late Helladic (Fig. 1), with 3 Archaic and 5 Hellenistic examples. The Mycenaean figurines are of the usual Phi, Psi, and Tau types, with 2 more naturalistic examples, and a third which may depict a man. The animals are of known types. Other finds are: many bronze fragments (parts of a large bronze vessel, pins, fibulae, a figurine of a feline, parts of an early fifth-century mirror, a bronze hoop and a ring, Fig. 2), 18 clay and steatite spindle whorls (Fig. 3), 21 loomweights of different types, a quantity of shells, single pieces of chalcite and unworked agate, a small fragment of Mycenaean wall-painting, a bone disc, much lead sheet, and finds from recent times, including coins of George II. Parts of a human skeleton were found as well as bones of domesticated animals, and teeth of an ovicapirid and a feline (likely a lion).
It has not yet been determined from which excavation these finds derive. It is likely that when the archaeological material previously stored in the Old Parliament was moved to the current museum in Syntagma Square in 1930, these were either left behind by oversight or were stored here perhaps during the war years.
