Chondreika plot, wider area of Kalydonas. Kilometre position 23 + 550 – 23 + 750. Maria Gatsi (ΛΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on discoveries made during construction work on the Ionian Road motorway. 

To the N/NE of this site, archaeological remains were found at fairly deep levels, while they were much higher at the W / SW. In total the site covers the Hellenistic through Middle Byzantine periods. 

Five sectors were investigated (Fig. 1,2). In sector A, a retaining wall was found. In sectors B, C and D, part of a Hellenistic and Late Roman cemetery was found, with a Late Roman bath and three-aisled basilica and large Christian cemetery. In addition, a ‘Macedonian type’ grave was excavated (Fig. 3), and also parts of a Roman bath (Fig. 4). 

At the W end of sector E, a section of a new road was found, running NW-SE, carved into the natural rock and with an uphill slope and curved path. To the E at a lower level, seven buildings were uncov-ered (Fig. 5). Most buildings were of the Hellenistic period, while some of the were reused and re-paired in the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. Towards the E end was a cluster of three buildings, made of large bricks and abundance in Hellenistic pottery sherds. At the N end, the corner of a large building was found, containing a circular well of the Roman-Byzantine periods.
