Property of Ch. Drellia, near Nea Idragogeia, Messolongi. Maria Gatsi (ΛΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on cleaning and exposing of sections of the ancient fortification wall.
About 80m of wall were investigated (Fig. 1,2), running in an EW orientation and ending 130m from the E gate of the citadel. On the N side of the wall, protrusions could show evidence for two towers, and perhaps a gate to one of these. The wall is formed of large limestone bricks (Fig. 3), with maximum width 2.30m. Structurally, it is similar to the wall in the SE tower of the city. Many structural remains of ancient buildings were found in this area (Fig. 4).
