Report
Potami site, Construction part K54, K55 and K56, Examilia area, Ancient Corinth. Konstantinos Kissas (LZ’ EPKA) reports on the rescue excavations taking place in the area ranging between Agioi Theodoroi, Corinth and Megalopoli, due to the constructions of a gas pipe. During the opening of the gas pipe trench at Potami Site, within the designated -yet uncircumscribed- archaeological site of Ancient Corinth, some architectural remains of sepulchral nature were located.
The excavations were held by archaeologists of the LZ’ EPKA, in collaboration with 25th EBA.
At least four plundered grave complexes were revealed (Fig. 1-3), consisting of stone constructions, and 28 graves [23 with ceramic roofs (Fig. 4), two sarcophagi, four jar burials, one box-grave, and one cist grave]. Due to the rescue nature of the excavations, they were confined within the width of the gas pipe trench. Therefore, the antiquities discovered were not fully investigated and a complete impression on them was not acquired.
The grave complexes had rectangular plans and their walls were of rows of stoneplinths and the floors were covered either with stones and bonding mortar or with ceramic slabs. The grave pit was opened on the floor.
After a KAS (Central Archaeological Council) official decision, the gas pipe went through the site, after some grave complexes were removed. The remaining antiquities were buried again for protection.
