Description
Ancient Olympia, Sanctuary of Demeter Chamynis. Christos Liagouras (Z’ EPKA) reports on a rectangular building (A) and 25 m. to the east, a Roman bath complex consisting of two rooms with hypocausts and a cistern (Figs 1. 2, 3). The building was aligned on an E-W axis and consisted of four rooms which were only partially preserved, with walls made of poros blocks. Most of the finds were fragmentary and included clay anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines (Fig. 4,5), parts of a large terracotta figurine, theatre masks, pottery and bronze coins. A particularly interesting find was of two clay figurines depicting double headed guard dogs holding flat-breads (popana) in their mouths (Figs 6). One of the figurines had the following inscription (Fig. 7):
[Δά]ματρι
Κόρ[α] [Βα]σιλεί
Based on the finds, the sanctuary may have been dedicated to Demeter and her daughter, referred to by Pausania as the Sanctuary of Demeter Chamynis.
