Megara - 2006
Megara, Meletiou Zacharia Street (O.T. 133, property of D. Kardatou). Panagiota Avgerinou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the excavation of a plot in the centre of the ancient city at which buildings of the Hellenistic and late Roman periods were constructed around a central well. The well had a depth of 19.8m, filled with water from 6.4m to the bottom.
In the NW and SW sections of the plot a late Roman building was found, which was constructed out of brick and tile and whose walls sat on the natural soil. Two rooms of the building contained coarse pottery of the late Roman period. In the foundations of the wall there was a red painted sherd of the fifth century BC. It is possible that the building was constructed on top of classical period remains.
A Hellenistic building was also discovered, built onto the bedrock. Hellenistic pottery was found inside, including perfume jugs, two kantharoi, the body of a lamp, and black painted sherds.
On the slopes to the N of the plot, sherds of Late Roman pottery were found.
