Description
Iria, Katsamba (property of the Tsilimigra brothers). Ch. Piteros (Δ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of the disturbed foundations of Hellenistic houses and Roman brick-built tombs on a site in the northwest of the Iria valley, south of the road from Skala to Karnazeika. A terracotta rhyton in the form of a ram was found in the area of the tombs. Late Geometric and Archaic pottery was also collected (including the rim of a burial pithos with incised decoration and a handmade amphora with an incised ‘M’), plus Classical and Hellenistic black-glaze sherds, and a Mycenaean kylix. Pottery is also reported on the Revythi and Zarouchlioti properties north of the road. To the east are the foundations of an ancient tower and a stretch of Hellenistic wall, and further north, a small Hellenistic fortification. Together, these remains indicate the existence of a significant Hellenistic fortified settlement at Iria. In addition, a church and house remains are reported further east in the area of Skala, with a Hellenistic limestone quarry in the area of Xydeika.
