Description
Liliano, Kastelli Kephala. G. Rethemiotakis (ΚΓ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the excavation of a peak sanctuary on the Kephala hill. The hill summit is a plateau north of a rock formation. Offerings were deposited in fissures in the rock. The largest pottery deposit (Middle Minoan III, principally cups) was at the front of the plateau as the slope descended. Finds were similar in type to those at the peak sanctuary at Sklaverochori, but much fewer (about 10% of the number). Animal figurines were mostly bulls with occasional goats, human figurines were fewer, there were model utensils decorated with horns of consecration and perhaps birds, and depictions of rocks with animals. A model of a rectangular peribolos had at its rear a stepped niche on which were disc-like objects, and to the left a human figure resting on the wall, surrounded by rock formations.
