Description
Dionysades islets. K. Preka-Alexandri, Th. Theotakis, X. Argyris and V. Mentogiannis (EMA) report the discovery of a cargo of Roman amphorae in the area of the Dionysades islets at the eastern tip of Crete. The dispersed pattern of the find over an area of 200 m2 suggests the ship was ruptured on the nearby reef, causing the load to scatter before the ship sank. Most of the amphorae were of Cretan type 2a (second half first to early second century AD): a second class was tentatively identified with the Tripolitaine I type, which dates to the first and second centuries AD.
