Gortyn. The Grand Theatre. Excavation by the ΚΓ’ ΕΠΚΑ revealed a life-sized stone statue of a male figure and some 50 intact first- to second-century AD relief lamps.
The theatre itself was set in a natural hollow and extended to the east. Vaults supported the outer parts of the cavea: the lower section had 18 rows of seats, with a further 11 above the diazoma. Each seat was marked off by a pair of pillars. Five passageways gave access to the cavea. Behind was a drainage channel.
