Description
Meristos (property of A. Makaratzi). E. Papastavrou (ΚΣτ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of four rock-cut pit graves (I, III, V, VI), a small limestone sarcophagus set into a cutting in the rock (IV), and a two-chambered underground tomb (II) with an entrance shaft and a limestone sarcophagus in each chamber. Later quarrying in part of the area had partially destroyed two of the pit graves. Excavation focused on an area designated for construction: many other tombs were visible elsewhere on the surface of the plot, but only seven pit graves (VII-XIV) and one underground double chamber tomb were investigated. All had been looted, but surviving goods indicate a date in the final decades of the sixth and the fifth centuries.
