Description
Agios Ioannis Riganas (property of A. Bardaki). M. Stavropoulou-Gatsi (then Director, ΛΣτ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of prehistoric activity extending over a low hill 3km south of the city of Agrinion, close to lake Lysimachia and by the Ermitsa stream. Trial excavation over the entire site revealed, in the centre and west of the site, groups of round or oval concentrations of unworked pieces of sandstone and river stones, with large quantities of pottery and bone. In places there were strong traces of burning mixed with bone. The pottery (poorly fired coarseware in local red clay) dates to the Middle Helladic period, with the possibility of a slight Mycenaean presence. Typical shapes are pithoi and large open vessels with two horizontal handles, noting also parts of a strainer.
