Description
Kamatero, Zorba and Kordatou Streets. Stamatia Katsandri (B’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of Roman graves and a drain.
Grave 1: tile grave containing a skeleton in supine position, a glass phiale, three glass unguentaria, glass sherds and a bronze coin. The grave had been sealed with two limestone blocks and a marble funeral stele, which had been placed with its decorated side facing down. The stele depicts a women standing, wearing a long dress. In front of the woman lie a kalathos and a mirror. The stele bears the inscription ΣΥΝΦΕΡΟΥΣΑ ΚΑΛΛΙΣΤΡΑΤΟΥΜΙΛΗΣΙΑ.
Grave 2: tile grave containing a skeleton in supine position and a small glass unguentarium.
Grave 3: empty tile grave
Grave 4: This was found under a destruction layer containing tiles, pottery sherds and bones. This grave contained a skull, few bones, a glass unguentarium, glass sherds and pieces of iron artefacts.
Bones, tiles and a miniature Roman oinochoe were found in the area of the burials. These could be the remains of a 5th grave that was destroyed.
Finally, a drain was excavated NE of the burials. It is likely that the drain predates the graves.
