Notice
Plain of Prodromi. G. Riginos (Η’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery, in the course of forestation on the plain of Paramythia, of ancient remains (walls, tombs, scattered building material etc.) on a number of properties. Discoveries in 2002 are reported at three locations.
Agioi (land of D. Demou): a stone pile (13m long and 1.1-1.3m wide) with a very few pithos and tile sherds (plus an iron nail and an unreadable bronze coin), 200m to the east of the Demou property excavated in 2000-2001. Nothing was found beneath the stones.
Avlakia, plain of Prodromi (land of K. Mini): a dense destruction deposit over an area of 15m2, 130m northeast of the site of Agioi. No building remains were recovered, but pieces of large limestone slabs had been piled on the borders of the property probably during agricultural work. Pottery recovered during removal of this deposit includes sherds of large and small domestic vessels, skyphoi, unguentaria, two conical terracotta loomweights, metal mails, masses of iron, a bronze fibula, thin bronze sheet, and a bronze coin probably of the Epirote League (the imagery is hard to read).
Varka/Dourou (land of K. Georgiou): trial excavation 200m east of Avlakia and 330m northeast of Agioi revealed a very few pieces of tile, vessel sherds, and one mass of iron.
