Description
Ithaca, Polis Bay. D. Evangelistis and C. Dellaporta (EMA) report that survey around the northern headland of Polis Bay revealed sherds of two Byzantine amphorae heaped together by the tip of the headland plus, further round (just inside the bay, at a depth of 17-31m) large sherds of North African 1 and Dressel 5 amphorae (amphorae are reported to continue to a depth of 40-45m). Two stone anchor stocks were found at a depth of ca 20m: even though their material suggests a different date, the technique of their manufacture and fact that they were found in the centre of the wreck area surrounded by sherds suggest that they should be associated with the rest of the cargo.
