Description
Aigion. L. Papazoglou-Manioudaki (National Museum) reviews Middle and Late Helladic evidence from rescue excavations in the modern town (especially the northeast part). The site was occupied in the Neolithic period (extensive Neolithic levels were discovered in 2005), destroyed at the end of EH II, and reoccupied in MH II. Most Middle Helladic architectural remains belong to a destruction level and are difficult to interpret. MH graves comprise one pithos and one cist (on 2 Aristeidou Street, Fig. 6) with no goods in situ but miniature Minyan vessels likely displaced nearby.
The settlement expanded in LH I. A large rectangular LH I building (on 8 Polychroniadou Street, Fig. 7) remained in use until its destruction in LH IIA: changes to the ground plan followed in LH IIB/IIIA1. A cist grave and two burials in a pit were found inside the LH I building, plus two pithos burials on the same building plot.
