Description
Intersection of Kyra-Vasilikis Street and Ieromnimonos Street, Ioannina. Georgia Pliakou (IB’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on rescue excavations that took place within the Kastro of Ioannina (Fig. 1).
Excavations were limited to the N part of the plot, towards the side of the Ottoman fortifications. Part of an ancient building came to light, revealing an outer wall with entrance threshold to a small part of an inner wall (Fig. 2). In this area, there was a large destruction deposit, consisting mainly of tiles. These remains are thought to be from the Hellenistic period, and represent the first substantial evidence of pre-Byzantine settlement at this site.
