Amyklai - 2021
Stavros Vlizos (ASA) reports on continued excavation in 2021 on the SW slope of Aghia Kyriaki hill. The excavation reached the bedrock, which showed signs of sliding during the Antiquity. In order to correct this, a 0.60 m wide terrace had been built parallel to the Geometric period peribolos. The layers retained by the wall contained LBA material, along with Mycenaean psi figurines and Geometric period sherds (with concentric circles and with birds). The excavator suggests that this layer belongs to a deposit from the Hyakinthia cult.
The next layer is dated to the archaic period and also contains remains from the 6th cent. Hyakinthia cult, such as miniature vases (aryballoi, craters, lakaines, amphorisks, kantharisks) and lead objects, knives, jewels and bone plaques. This area was cultivated in the later byzantine period.
The material gathered up to now shows occupation in Amyklai from the 7th to the 4th century BC. Laconian and Corinthian pottery has been recovered, as well as an attic black figure vase and black glazed plate with incised and relief decoration.
