Description
Kato Achaia, 26th Athinas Street (property of Th. and Ch. Tapeinou). Vasiliki Tsaknaki (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of small numbers of architectural remains including walls and a pit. Walls 9 (4.10 m.) and 10 (3.50 m.) formed the south-eastern corner of a building dated to the Classical period (Fig. 1). They were constructed of hard local limestone blocks of various sizes, while pottery of the Archaic period was found in their foundations. Another building (1β) defined by walls 8 and 11 was identified to the east, while in the same area were walls 7(α,β) and 13, dated to earlier than the Hellenistic. Other building remains included wall 6 and a pottery deposit (1.20x1.12 m.) in the middle of the northern part of the property. In the north-eastern part of the property was a built cistern made of successive layers of tiles, lined internally and externally with whitish plaster. In the same area were Late Hellenistic walls 1(α,β,γ), 2(α,β) and 4(α,β), forming a room of 4.60 m. in width, all roughly made of sandstone blocks, tile fragments, rubble and limestone blocks robbed from walls 9 and 10. Roman pottery and coins were also found.
